Tiivistelmä:Recent substantive reshaping to the English National Health Service expanded patient choice and stimulated hospitals to compete within a market with fixed prices. This study examines whether these reforms improved hospital quality. We use a difference-in-difference-style estimator to assess whether hospital quality (measured using mortality from acute myocardial infarction) improved more rapidly in more competitive markets after these reforms took effect in 2006. It is found that after the reforms' implementation, mortality fell (i.e. quality improved) for patients living in markets with more competition. Our results indicate that hospital competition can lead to improved hospital quality.
