Tiivistelmä:The Internet has had a large impact on how people interact, communicate, conduct business, seek jobs, find partners, and shop. Many have registered on social networking sites to connect with others, and employers are taking advantage of that by using these sites to do background checks on job applicants. Employers often reject applications based on information gathered from social networking sites, and only few employers have policies to govern the use of online character checks. This article examines how these inexpensive, informal online character checks hurt the society. It offers guidance to employers on how and when to use social networking sites in a socially responsible manner.
