| Tiivistelmä: | We conduct a pan-European efficiency analysis to inspect the performance of European railways, particularly focusing on economies of vertical integration. The hypothesis that integrated railways actualize economies of scope and, thus, produce more efficient railway service is tested. To decide whether joint or separate production is more efficient, we utilize a data envelopment analysis super-efficiency bootstrapping model which relates the efficiency for integrated production to a reference set of separated firms using a different production technology. It is found that for most European railways, economies of scope exist. |
