Tiivistelmä:This study compares the historical evolution of four prominent industry clusters: automobiles in Detroit, Michigan, tires in Akron, Ohio, semiconductors in Silicon Valley, California, and cotton garments in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Detailed data are collected regarding the intellectual and geographic roots of entrants into the clusters and other regions to probe the underlying mechanisms of geographic clustering. The main working mechanism in the four clusters involves employees, who leave established firms to found their own ones or shape new entrants in their industry. Questions and policy implications concerning the spinoff mechanism and employee mobility are discussed.
