Tiivistelmä:In this paper, the connection between a country's prevalence of new ventures and its economic growth rate is investigated, while also acknowledging new ventures' export orientation. It is generally recognized that new venture creation as well as export activity may both be important strategies for enhancing national economic growth. However, to our knowledge it hasn't been attempted to investigate empirically the role of export-driven new ventures in economic growth. Focusing on the national level, we use data for a sample of 34 countries in 2002-2008. The results imply that, on top of a positive relation between entrepreneurial activity in general and following macroeconomic growth, there is also a positive effect of export-oriented early-stage entrepreneurship in higher-income countries. However, no such additional effect exists in lower-income countries.
