Tiivistelmä:The aim of the study is to present how the topics of knowledge-based development (KBD), especially of knowledge cities (KCs) have attracted the interest of numerous researchers and practitioners recently. The methodology is based on the examination of already identified KCs and also five additional KCs cases. For the new set of KCs, the authors investigate at which degree each case supports the hypotheses. It is found that all previously examined cities continue active support of their KBD and the majority of the hypotheses continue to be valid, while three of them need slight changes to adapt to current conditions. The main added-value elements of this paper are the re-examination of the current status of successful KCs on one hand and the update of the design, development and operation framework of KCs on the other hand.
