Tiivistelmä:The influence of faculty patenting is examined on the rate, quality, and content of public research outputs in a panel dataset of 3,862 academic life scientists. Applying inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTW) to account for self-selection into patenting, it is found that patenting is positively related to the rate of publications and weakly on the quality of the publications. Patenters are also found to possibly shift their research focus to questions of commercial interest. The conclusion is that the often voiced concern of patenting in academe having a nefarious effect on public research output is misplaced.
