Tiivistelmä: | The article explores the leadership of department heads in a university hospital in daily practice. These 'doctors in the lead' connect the medical and the management worlds in the hospital. They can influence their colleagues' clinical activities more efficiently than a non-medical manager. However, it is not a trouble-free task. The empirical analysis bases on the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu -- habitus, field and capital. The medical habitus affects the questions and dilemmas department heads face, as well as the ways they can use to exert influence on their colleagues. 'Janus-faced' they look at the medical and the management world using two different logics. Sometimes they display managerial behaviour, the medical habitus still remaining their second nature. The findings implicate that the formal hierarchy of the hospital organization should be moved more in line with the informal professional hierarchy. |
