Tiivistelmä:Stabilizing pollution levels in the long run is a precondition for sustainable growth. We create a neoclassical growth model with endogenous emission diminishing predicting that, along optimal sustainable paths, pollution growth rates are positively connected with output growth (scale effect) and negatively connected with emission levels (defensive effect). This dynamic law reduces to a convergence equation empirically tested for two big and regulated air pollutants – sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides – with a panel data set of 25 European countries over the years 1980–2005. Conventional parametric models are rejected by the data, whereas more flexible regression techniques confirm that both the scale and the defensive effect exist, supporting the model predictions.
