Tiivistelmä:Individuals who are likely to realize the biggest benefits from air quality improvements often depend on other members of their households to contribute by time or money to their care. These dependency relationships among household members pose challenges for benefit estimation as it is unlikely that the conditions required for recovering the underlying individual preferences from household choices are satisfied in this setting. We suggest a conceptual framework, highlighting the role of these dependencies in the choice models used on estimating the willingness to pay for improvements in environmental quality. We conduct a complementary stated preference survey describing hypothetical dependencies for household members of different ages to test the implications of the model. Respondents' stated choices acknowledge the proposed care-giving responsibilities for young children and teenagers, however not for older adults.
