| Tiivistelmä: | This case study investigates the relevance of considering social and political factors when a corporation is making an essential business decision. In September 2009, Simon Beresford-Wylie, the outgoing Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) CEO, was evaluating the company's achievements - while acknowledging the latest public criticism of NSN's business relationship with the Iranian government. In the summer of 2009, NSN was accused of complicity in violating human rights, linking to Iran's presidential election. They sold network infrastructure and software solutions to the Iranian government, which used the technology to spy on, block, and control domestic communications. Should NSN have done differently? Students are asked to examine the economic and moral arguments for and against selling products to an oppressive government that might use those to violate human rights. In such a case, does also the corporation bear responsibility for human rights violations committed by the oppressive regime? |
