Tiivistelmä:The consumption behaviour of international tourists from Australia's four major source markets is analyzed in this article. Their consumption expenditures display interesting similarities as well as diversities in consumption patterns, which are reviewed in the context of a utility-maximising framework. Models combining five major components of tourist consumption, accommodation, food, transport, shopping and entertainment, are estimated with the aid of neoclassical economic theory of consumer behaviour. Results show that tourist consumption is affected by income more than prices, and that this might be a result of a lack of information about the destination leading to sub-optimal consumption choices.
