Tiivistelmä:This article develops a differentiated products model of school competition, distinguishing among various dimensions that matter in the process of skill acquisition. The model forecasts that when identical schools compete for students, specialization may become a competition strategy, serving rich students' education goals well. Poorer students, however, may attend schools whose specializations don't cater to their relative strengths. By doing so, the poorer students complement the richer students' weaknesses through peer effects and receive financial aid in return. Strong support for the model's predictions about within-school implications of specialization is provided.
