Tiivistelmä:This paper studies the creation of informal workplace hierarchies in the context of recent changes in the British labour market. Prior work has identified that deskilling of jobs has eliminated formal hierarchies among many production workers, and that informal hierarchies based upon factors such as contractual status have took their place. This article aims to examine how changes in the labour force direct new informal hierarchies' development among migrant and immigrant workers taking these jobs through an agency. The research consisted of 50 semi-structured interviews and lengthy observation of both work and social frameworks, at three food manufacturers. The results imply that language and cultural issues create a complex informal hierarchy between directly employed and agency workers, but also among and within various groups of migrant and immigrant agency workers.
