| Tiivistelmä: | This paper examines the key influences that encourage mountaineer tourists, categorized as a type of adventure tourist, to take part in package mountaineering holidays. Understanding of why tourists choose package adventure holidays is limited, yet their demand has recently shown much growth. In-depth interviews have been conducted with mountaineer tourists for the study either during or after their package mountaineering holiday in the Chamonix region of the French Alps. The findings provide an insight into package mountaineer tourists. Firstly, mountaineering acted as an important part of respondents' lifestyles. Secondly, in contrast to prior research on experienced mountaineers, respondents did not see risk as an important motive and did not consider themselves risk takers. Thirdly, skills development and experience were key motives to participate in package mountaineering holiday. Fourthly, a major concern was to have a safe mountaineering experience with the mountaineering organisation and the guide playing a significant role. |
