Tiivistelmä:This paper explores R&D subsidiary (henceforth as: sub/s.) isolation within multinational corporations (MNCs) competing in knowledge-intensive (herein as: k-i.) industries. For these MNCs, accessing knowledge and fostering the innovative potential of R&D sub/s. is vital for on-going competitiveness which requires integration of the sub/s. within the host country and also internally within the MNCs. Yet, according to recent studies, overseas sub/s. can become isolated, even in high-technology sectors.
This paper deals with this issue by focusing on organizational factors at corporate and subsidiary levels with the potential of explaining subsidiary isolation.
Using a combination of questionnaire and secondary data, this paper analyzes a sample of 45 foreign-owned Austrian subsidiaries doing R&D in k-i. industries. Based on the results, it is suggested among others that parent and subsidiary experience, the degree of early-stage research performed by the subsidiary and the use of training and rotation practices by the subsidiary, all counteract isolation.
