Tiivistelmä:We re-investigate the labor donation theory of not-for-profits and show that these organizations may not necessarily exist because motivated workers choose to work in them, or that they exceed for-profits' performance in terms of welfare, but because the excessive supply of motivated workers improves non-profit form's attractiveness to managers. We demonstrate that if firms had to compete for motivated workers, not-for-profit firms would perish against for-profit firms. Hence, in the choice between not-for-profit and for-profit provision, other than incentive problems, rents' distribution between management and workers, and consequently, the relative scarcity of motivated workers can have a key role.
