Tiivistelmä:In the world of today, the corporate image of the largest companies is closely connected to their performance in corporate social responsibility and information disclosure on that topic, particularly, on climate change. As the Board of Directors is responsible for this process, this article aims to demonstrate the role that companies' Boards of Directors have in the accountability process vis-à-vis stakeholders in relation to one highly significant aspect in environmental information: practices used in monitoring greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve this, we will verify certain business attributes, further than the size and activity of the Board of Directors, and consider various dependence models. These models will feature variables related to the level of independence and diversity of the Board of Directors, which interact with dummy variables describing the company's litigation risks regarding environmental behavior and the institutional macro-context of the organization's home country. The results show that Boards of Directors basically focus on the conventional responsibility of creating economic value, instead of dealing with broader business world concepts of today, including social responsibility. Thus, this focus does not favor the accountability process before other stakeholders, if it makes protecting shareholders' interests more difficult.
