Tiivistelmä: | Disclosure of medical and errors to patients has been increasingly authorized in the U.S. and Canada. Therefore, certain health systems are developing formal disclosure policies. This article examines how disclosure training may affect staff and the organization. We claim that organizations supporting 'disclose and apologize' activities, in contrast to 'deny and defend,' demonstrate values-based ethics. Particularly, we hypothesized that when there is training and support for health care clinicians in error disclosure, a values-based ethical environment may be reached, and staff can show more commitment to the organization. 325 clinical care providers employed by a large hospital recently beginning to implement disclosure policies and training have been surveyed. Disclosure training explained significant variance in ethical environment perceptions, while ethical environment mediated the relation between disclosure training and organizational commitment. Even if this study examined disclosure of medical errors, organizational support for error disclosure is a concept possibly relevant for numerous types of organizations. |
