Tiivistelmä:The relevance of marketing and consumption phenomena to the interpretation of meaning in works of art is examined. Literature about the consumption of artwork is reviewed. The importance of the topic is highlighted. Consumption symbolism is analysed. A paradigmatic case example is described in detail. Concrete examples are found for consumption in the play examined. Trivial and artistic consumption patterns of the different characters are compared. The analysis shows how the use of consumption symbolism can provide meaning in works of art and can serve as a sign for what things in life endure. Prospects for further research are summarized.
