Tiivistelmä:The assumptions of a risk neutral firm, intra-union insurance, and homogeneous workers with a zero elasticity demand for leisure are known to lead to efficient contracts with employment levels identical to those of a competitive spot-market. It is shown that this result no longer holds if there is a distinction between workers who are "insiders" and who "outsiders". The cases of symmetric information and asymmetric information are separately examined. It is demonstrated that the effect of the union may lead to either over- or under-employment of outsiders. Both employment and wage levels depend crucially on the form of the constraint facing the union and the nature of the bargaining process.
