| Tiivistelmä: | Three basic types of reduction of databases are described: simple reduction /identifying ways of excluding unwanted elements/; graphical reduction /that spans simple and complex reduction but is more than either/; and complex reduction /which makes the dataset more complicated in order to extract basic information/. Three directions of extending analyses - further back in time, across the roughly contemporaneous datasets and downwards into the origins of the dataset - are described. Some practical tips for the research managers facing the data explosion are presented. Changes across the past two decades /speed of the systems, strange attachments, large data gathering organisations and the scanning revolution/ are discussed. |
