Abstract (eng): | This thesis studies third party service provisioning in Session Initiation Protocol-based UMTS network, more specifically in the IMS environment. The main objective of this thesis is to conclude which of the third party service provisioning technologies is most applicable to the IMS environment considering some network agnostic and IMS-specific challenges related to third party service provisioning. There is also an ambition to find out which of the technologies are on the roadmap and interest of telecommunication equipment vendors, and why they have made such decisions. The literature study of the thesis starts by describing IMS from the standardization organization and architectural perspective. Thereafter the SW protocol that is used as the primal signalling protocol between the IMS architecture elements is introduced. Service provisioning in the IMS service provisioning architecture and the OMA Service Environment is studied bringing in especially the SW-based Service Enablers that the value-added services are built on. Some network agnostic and IMS-specific challenges of third party service provisioning are identified. Three different service provisioning technologies -namely Parlay/OSA, Web Services and SW -are presented and their capability in answering to the challenges is analysed. Finally, the findings of the empirical part of the thesis that consists of semi-structured interviews conducted for two telecommunication equipment vendors are presented. The primary finding of the literature study is that Parlay/OS A with few enhancements is the most applicable third party service provisioning technology for the IMS environment. These enhancements include introducing a SIP SCS that will expose a Call Control API closely related to SW, in addition to introducing few additional Service Capability Features to cover all the service opportunities offered by IMS. The vendor interviews showed that generally vendors do not see Parlay/OS A, Web Services and SW replacing each other, but rather complementing each other. Therefore all of the technologies are on the road map of the vendors. However, it was found out that the technologies enable somewhat different business models for the operator concerning the network domain where the technology enables the third party application server to reside. |
Abstract (fin): | Tämä diplomityö tutkii kolmansien osapuolien palvelun provisiointia SIP-pohjaisessa UMTS-verkossa, tarkemmin IMS-ympäristössä. Diplomityön päätavoite on päätellä, mikä kolmansien osapuolien palvelun projisiointiteknologioista on sopivin IMS-ympäristöön ottaen huomioon joitakin verkkoriippumattomia ja IMS:n asettamia erityisiä haasteita liittyen kolmansien osapuolien palvelun provisiointiin. Palvelun provisiointia tutkitaan IMS-palvelunprovisiointiarkkitehtuurissa Ja OMA-palveluympäristössä tuoden erityisesti esiin palvelun mahdollistajat, joihin lisäarvopalvelut nojautuvat. Joitakin kolmansien osapuolien palvelun provisiointiin liittyviä verkkoriippumattomia ja IMS:n erityisesti asettamia haasteita tunnistetaan. Kolme eri palvelunprovisiointiteknologiaa Parlay/OSA, Web Services, ja SIP esitellään ja niiden kyvykkyyttä vastata haasteisiin analysoidaan. Lopulta löydökset diplomityön empiirisestä osuudesta, joka koostuu puolistrukturoiduista haastatteluista kahdelle telekommunikaatioalan laitevalmistajalle, esitellään. Tärkein kirjallisuustutkimuksen löydös on se, että Parlay/OSA muutamilla parannuksilla on sopivin kolmansien osapuolien palvelunprovisiointiteknologiaksi IMS-ympäristössä. Nämä parannukset sisältävät SIP SCS:n käyttöönoton, joka paljastaa läheisesti SIP-yhteenkuuluvan puhelunohjausrajapinnan, sekä lisäksi muutamien täydentävien palvelun kyvykkyysominaisuuksien käyttöönoton kattamaan kaikki IMS:n tarjoamat palvelumahdollisuudet. Laitevalmistajahaastattelut osoittivat, että yleisesti laitevalmistajat eivät näe Parlay/OSA-, Web Services- ja SIP-teknologioita toisiaan korvaavina, vaan mieluummin täydentävinä. Siksi kaikki kyseiset teknologiat ovat laitevalmistajien suunnitelmissa. Osoittautui kuitenkin, että teknologiat mahdollistavat jokseenkin erilaisia liiketoimintamalleja operaattorille koskien verkkoaluetta, jolla teknologia mahdollistaa kolmannen osapuolen sovelluspalvelimen sijaitsevan. |
