Abstract (eng): | This thesis tells about a direction of glycol concentrated storm waters at airports. It concentrates especially to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Aircrafts need de- and anti-icing when temperature is near or below zero to secure the flight safety. De- and anti-icing is usually done with glycol based fluids. At the Helsinki-Vantaa airport propylene glycol is being used. From the surface of the airplanes glycol falls onto the ground and flushes into the environment with storm waters (rain or melting waters) if it is not captured and directed elsewhere. Glycol is not a toxic chemical, but it causes oxygen consumption and bad smell in waters. At Helsinki-Vantaa airport most of the glycol used is gathered straight after usage with special vehicles and transported to a digestor. The aim is to direct glycol concentrated storm waters into a sewer or through a ground treatment system and storm waters without glycol concentration into the environment. The views for the future control of the glycol concentrated storm waters may be a better use of centralized de-icing areas and the use of online analyzers. Two online TOC analyzers were tested at Helsinki-Vantaa airport during the winter 2008-2009. The results are analyzed in the thesis. There were several problems with the usage of the analyzers, but it seems that one of the tested analyzers could work in this target. Analyzer experiences also from other airports are presented in the thesis. The circumstances for online analyzers at the airports seem to be challenging. Still it is becoming more common to use online analyzer as a tool to direct storm waters to the right place. It is reasonable to separate and collect the glycol concentrated storm water as early as possible before they are diluted. That is why planning of the infrastructure of airport plays a major role in the direction of glycol concentrated storm waters. Online analyzers do not lower the meaning of planning and primary separating, but they can be useful tools when planning an efficient control of glycol concentrated storm waters. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä tarkastellaan glykolipitoisten hulevesien ohjausta lentoasemilla, erityisesti Helsinki-Vantaalla. Toiselta analysaattorilta saadut tulokset vastasivat kohtalaisesti samalta ajanjaksolta saatuja laboratoriotuloksia. Tarkastelussa on mukana analysaattorikokemuksia myös muilta lentoasemilta. On odotettavissa, että lentoasemien hulevesien ohjaus jatkuvatoimisten analysaattoreiden avulla tulee yleistymään. Joillakin lentoasemilla on jo käytössä toimiva automatisoitu ohjaussysteemi, kun taas usealla lentoasemalla ollaan tällä hetkellä testausvaiheessa. Suunnittelulla ja sitä myöten vesien erottelulla jo glykolipäästöjen syntyvaiheessa on keskeinen rooli hulevesien ohjauksessa. Jatkuvatoimiset analysaattorit eivät tule vähentämään suunnittelun ja rakenteiden avulla toteutetun esierottelun tärkeyttä, mutta analysaattorin tuomat mahdollisuudet toimivat uutena työkaluna suunniteltaessa tehokkaampaa lentoasemien hulevesien ohjausta. |
