Abstract:The author sets up a new metaphor for competition drawn from of biology and social systems. He suggests that a company be viewed as a part of a business eco-system, in which companies 'co-evolve' around a new innovation, working cooperatively and competitively to support new products and satisfy customer needs. Whether that means investing in new technology, signing on suppliers, developing elements of value to maintain leadership, or incorporating new innovations, executives must understand the evolutionary stages all business eco-systems go through, and how to direct those changes.
