Abstract: | Business analysts attributed the loss of USA market share in the semiconductor industry to unfair Japanese practices, like trade barriers and dumping. The author draws from a study of semiconductor firms to argue that the market share losses were also influenced by the different competitive modes that USA and Japanese firms use. USA firms compete by developing a unique business strategy, Japanese firms by implementing not-so-unique strategies better than anyone else. He shows the implications of these two competitive styles for business activities. |
