Abstract:Changes in customer demands in terms of speed to market, product variety, and quality require manufacturers to carefully examine their new product developments cycles. The use of common parts and designs is a powerful and accessible way for firms to compete in the competitive global market. The example presented shows that commonality can provide far reaching competitive advantages such as speed to market and improved product quality. Commonality has grown from a tactical cost saving mechanism to a strategic, competitive weapon.
