Abstract:This paper deals with resource divestment (henceforth as: res-div.) as an important firm-level resource management capability manifesting a 2-step organizational change routine. Companies have to be motivated to engage in res-div., and to decide which resources should be 'sold off'. In exploring this firm-level capability, a factor market theory is used to consider the market's 'seller side' A useful framework is provided for conceptualizing how firms generate competitive advantage through res-div. The model res-div. capability model is tested through a dataset of professional baseball franchises from 1969 to 1983.
