Abstract:This study explores the question 'Are business models useful?' It is pointed out that business models (henceforth as: b-m/s.) act as various forms of model: to provide means to describe and classify businesses, to operate as sites for scientific investigation, and to act as recipes for creative managers. It is argued that studying b-m/s. as models is rewarding in enabling us to see how they embody multiple and mediating roles. The ideas are illustrated with reference to practices in the real world and to academic analyses, particularly in this journal's Special Issue on Business Models.
