Abstract:In companies all over the world, CSR has become an important element of the business strategy. Since its launch by the UN in 2000, the Global Compact (GC) has grown to about 2900 companies and 3800 members in total. The GC unites many mechanisms in order to support CSR strategies: normative principles, learning and co-operation networks, and transparency and communication about CSR activities. This paper aims to increase knowledge through a case study examination of three leading companies (British Telecom BT, Deutsche Telekom DT, and Telenor) in the telecommunications industry. It is shown that the GC is only one of the many initiatives employed by these companies in shaping, implementing, and reporting about their CSR strategies, with its role being at most modest.
