Abstract:Viewing published articles as production units, the authors explore whether there is some empirical regularity in the patterns of research productivity in academic marketing literature. A data set comprising 11 leading marketing journals is studied, and the results provide strong evidence for the existence of regularity. The regularity can be calculated using the generalized Lotka's Law of scientific productivity, according to which the number of authors publishing n paper is approximately 1/n^c of those publishing one paper. The results of the study also indicate that authorship concentrations have increased since 1965, and that the concentration levels in leading marketing journals are mostly driven by a journal's maturity, topical focus, relative attractiveness as a publication outlet, the characteristics of its review process and the extent of author collaborations.
