Tiivistelmä (eng): 884 Warehouse is an old warehouse designed by Norwegian Architect EJ.
Müller in 1932, located in Xinhua Port Area near Lujiazui Financial Center, Pudong District, Shanghai.
As the shift of the port area from an urban area to the exterior of Huangpu River, this old port area is ordinated to serve as the extension of Lujiazui Financial Center.
The existing warehouses in the port area, which belong to Shanghai International Port Group, need regenerations.
This thesis demonstrates optional renovations and conversions of existing warehouses in functional orientations in urban scale and building design.
Furthermore, the development plan takes into account the demands of residents in the local community, clients of the port in the long term and places the port area as a supplement to Lujiazui Financial Center.

My master's thesis introduces a development plan for 884 Warehouse.
On the basis of municipal decision and the demands of the existing community, new functions and images are loaded into this massive building under current urban contexts and economic environments to serve the community and Financial Center in a sustainable way.
The plan outlines a renovation of the old warehouse for commercial spaces, storage like spaces and Eataly market with dining places.
Additionally, there is an extension consisting of performing spaces and catering spaces.
The objective of the development plan is to conduct residents and visitors into the old area.
Meanwhile the development plan creates transparent and cozy places in the same logic of Eataly that people sell what they cook and cook what they sell.
Customers can enjoy fresh foods from farmers and are served freely with the selected ones in the market.
Commercially, the logic of Eataly is to integrate and organize the relevant business deals in a session to generate more value and better experience in consuming.
Architecturally, the logic of Eataly is to create flexible spaces and range sequenced functions in an active and live mode to fulfil the sessions.

In view of the characteristics and versatility of the subject, the plan focuses on profiling the development of strategy and defining the spatial program.
The plan applies sustainable solutions on utilizing solar energy and rainwater into the plan by the characteristics of the existing building and site and demonstrates the basic structural and HVAC solution.
The interactions between the old warehouse and new extension play an important role in the circulation of traffic.

The written part of the work is based on written sources, archive research, and one commercial proposal of Xinhua Port Area.
This part concentrates on the background of Xinhua Pan, 884 Warehouse, and representative the foreign architects at the time when E.J.
Müller was active in Shanghai.
The written part includes the deductive process of the plan in the topological diagrams.
This three-year research has not only guided me in comprehending the characteristics of 884 Warehouse in Xinhua Port as a critical part of renovation and development plan but also inspired me in conceiving possibilities beyond sustainability to achieve better architectural designs.
