You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): The study concentrated on the development of a feasible method for the fabrication of glass fibre reinforced composite structures for railway applications.
The work was focused on the production method, where acrylic based resin was injected by vacuum infusion into the glass fibre reinforced web structure.
The aluminium trihydroxide was used as the flame retardant chemical.

The literature survey cleared up the future flame retardant requirements and the testing methods of the application.
The national requirements in the main ED countries are also referred briefly.

Experimental studies investigated the effect of the dosage of aluminium trihydroxide on the injection properties of the resin, on the strength properties of the structure and on the fire performance.
Special injection layers inside of the structure were utilized in order to improve the penetration of the resin in the fabrications tests.
The injection properties of various types of injection layers and resin systems were also tested.
Some other fabrication methods and materials have also been tested shortly in the study.

Based on the results of the fabrication and material tests and on the analysis of the flame retardants, some recommendations are given for further process improvements and future studies.
The most promising alternative for the development of the commercial production method would be a new type of glass fibre material, where the granular particles of the flame retardants are integrated into the glass fibre reinforcement.
This will allow the use of longer injection distances and higher chemical content, which will enable more uniform quality of the products.
Abstract (fin): Työn tarkoituksena oli kehittää menetelmä, jolla voidaan valmistaa taloudellisesti kannattavasti kiskokaluston lujitemuovisia palosuojattuja kuorirakenteita.
Työn rajauksissa valmistusmenetelmäksi määritettiin alipaineinjektio ja materiaaleiksi akryylipohjainen hartsisysteemi, palonestoaineeksi alumiinitrihydroksi ja lujitteeksi lasikuitu.

Työn kirjallisessa osassa selvitettiin sovellutuskohteen palovaatimuksia sekä niiden toteennäyttömenetelmiä.
Muita valmistusmenetelmiä sekä materiaaleja on käsitelty työn materiaalirajoituksesta huolimatta.

Kokeellisessa osassa tutkittiin palonestoaineena käytetyn jauhemaisen alumiinitrihydroksin määrän vaikutusta hartsisysteemin injektoitavuuteen sekä laminaatin mekaanisiin ominaisuuksiin ja palavuuteen.
Valmistuskokeissa käytettiin kahta lujiteaihion sisäistä varsin erityyppistä hartsinjuoksutuskerrosta.
Lisäksi kokeiltiin muita injektiolujitteita.

Valmistusmenetelmän parannusehdotukset ja jatkotutkimuskohteet on johdettu valmistus-, aineenkoestus- ja polttokokeista saaduista kokemuksista ja havainnoista.
Jatkotutkimuskohteista lupaavin on paloestoaineen integrointi suoraan lujitekerrokseen, jolloin injektointimatkoja olisi mahdollista kasvattaa suuria palonestoainepitoisuuksia käytettäessä.
