Abstract (eng): | Experiences gained from the use of server-based television news systems, pilot projects and current installations have clearly indicated that solutions based on information technology (IT) could provide a completely new television production environment. Although currently these solutions have been mainly used in individual production phases, it has become evident that the main potentials are in developing fully IT -based production chains. However, experiences have also highlighted several problem areas. One of the most critical ones has been the interoperability problem between products from different manufacturers. Many existing implementations are based on proprietary file formats and exchanges can't be carried across these platforms. Partly because of this, production systems have been introduced as isolated solutions, rather than larger networked infrastructures. Recognizing these problems, users, manufacturers and standardization organizations have started to co-operate in order to develop the required standards. Undoubtedly the biggest effort has been put into standardization of a file format, called Material Exchange Format (MXF). Much of the future expectations are put on MXF and several manufacturers are already providing support for it. The MXF is now partly standardized and user organizations are encountering the analysis phase. Manufacturers won't be able to introduce complete package solutions, but each company has to make its own decision, whether they will use MXF and for what purposes. The goal for the thesis was to evaluate the use of MXF in YLEs production. The thesis is roughly split into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part describes the main technologies and practices in the current-and future television production, while the practical part describes the evaluation results, based on literature survey, interviews and related documentation from the YLEs production environment. |
Abstract (fin): | Kokemukset informaatio-teknologiaan (IT) perustuvista tuotantojärjestelmistä, mm. uutistuotannosta, ovat selkeästi osoittaneet mahdollisuuden nykyistä kehittyneemmän, nauhattoman tuotantoympäristön luomiseen. Vaikka suurin potentiaali olisi kokonaisten tuotantoketjujen muodostamisessa, IT-ratkaisuja on tällä hetkellä käytössä ainoastaan yksittäisissä tuotantovaiheissa. |
