Abstract (eng): | This thesis describes an approach based on role descriptions for user requirements elicitation. The approach is characterized by role-based analysis and description of data gathered in user studies. A role is a collection of responsibilities that accomplish a coherent part of the work carried out in an organization. Roles are seen as atomic elements which compose the work the work of an employee is made up of one or several roles. A role description describes in verbal form the tasks and the context associated with the role. The approach developed in this thesis is based on principles and methods introduced in Contextual Design and Goal-Directed Design. Users are studied by interview and observation. The data gathered in the studies is then analysed with a method that follows the principles of role-based analysis in Contextual Design. In the analysis the users' work is broke up into roles using an affinity diagram. Role descriptions are then produced by transforming the information in the affinity diagram into verbal form. The format of the descriptions resembles personas introduced in Goal-Directed Design. Finally, user requirements of the system being developed are elicited from the role descriptions. The approach described in this thesis was developed in a product development project in Adage Corporation. The approach was used in eliciting user requirements for a web-based content management system being developed in the project. The suitability of the approach for the project was then evaluated in two ways. The product development team was interviewed and the properties of the approach were compared to Contextual Design and Goal-Directed Design. Based on the evaluation, the approach was found to be easy to use in product development. The approach was also considered to be lighter than Contextual Design and Goal-Directed Design. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä työssä esitellään roolikuvauksiin perustuva lähestymistapa käyttäjävaatimusten selvittämiseksi. Lähestymistavan keskeisenä piirteenä on rooleihin perustuva käyttäjätutkimusaineiston analyysi- ja kuvausmenetelmä. Roolilla tarkoitetaan joukkoa yhteenkuuluvia vastuita, jotka muodostavat yhtenäisen osan organisaatiossa tehtävää työtä. Roolit nähdään työn pienimpinä jakamattomina osatekijöinä, joista työntekijöiden työ rakentuu: yksittäisen työntekijän työ voi koostua yhdestä tai useammasta roolista. Roolikuvaus on sanalliseen muotoon kirjoitettu kuvaus, joka kuvaa rooliin kuuluvia työtehtäviä ja niihin liittyvää kontekstia. Työssä kehitetty lähestymistapa perustuu Contextual Designissa ja Tavoiteohjatussa suunnittelussa (Goal-Directed Design) esiteltyihin periaatteisiin ja menetelmiin. Käyttäjätutkimus suoritetaan haastattelun ja havainnoinnin avulla. Kerätyn aineiston analyysitapa vastaa periaatteeltaan Contextual Designissa käytettyä rooleihin perustuvaa analyysia. Aineiston analysointiin käytetaan yhteenkuuluvuuskaaviota (affinity diagram), jonka avulla haastateltujen käyttäjien työ hajotetaan rooleihin. Yhteenkuuluvuuskaaviossa olevat tiedot kiteytetään roolikuvauksiksi, joiden esitysmuoto muistuttaa Tavoiteohjatun suunnittelun persoonia. |
