Abstract (eng): | The objective of this thesis was to clarify the Historian database concept and to gain an understanding of how it can be applied in a power Distribution Automation system. The suitability of ARB's RTDB database system as a historical information system for ABB's Micr0SCADA product was evaluated. The thesis discusses how process data can be effectively transferred between components in an automation system, paying particular attention to the OPC (OLE for Process Control) interface. Optimized Historian databases are carefully studied and compared with traditional relational databases. The special properties of process data are examined and the concept with temporal or time-series data is explained. Various algorithms for effective compression of process data are also discussed. The thesis also briefly explains what the Distribution Automation concept is and how protective relays are used to control eIectrical equipment in a power distribution network. MicroSCADA's role as a network control center is explained. The Historian database can record statistical data derived from advanced measurements in protective relays. This thesis proposes how a Historian can be used to calculate estimated health values for circuit breakers. The work conducted during the writing of this thesis contributed to the process of finding a new report tool or historical information system for ABB's MicroSCADA system. |
