Abstract (eng): | Service operations have earlier been constrained to local delivery. Due to improvements in technology, especially in telecommunication, the remote delivery of some services has become possible. Remote service operations enable a global service operation structure, where value-adding activities are dispersed across the globe. This thesis looks at decision-making models are used to determine the global operation structure. Global operations structure affects the competitiveness of the business and is determined through the decisions of the level of concentration, extent of offshoring, locations of units, specialization of units, and level of coordination. These decisions are long-term and relatively static, so they should be made with prudence. Concentration may improve efficiency through economies of scale, but decrease understanding of local needs. Location decisions affect e.g. operating costs, availability of resources and their quality. The competitiveness of service business may be improved through a re-structuring of the global service operations. Changes should be based on a thorough analysis. The extent of economies of scale is one basis for deciding the level of concentration. Scale effects differ for activities. The activities to be co-located in one unit should utilize the same resources and skills. Location decisions should be based on a balanced analysis of the business environment. The needs to coordinate operations across units should also be considered in the decision-making. After a potential configuration for operations has been determined, an investment model for implementation should be constructed and evaluated. Operations structure has previously been addressed in academic literature from the standpoint of manufacturing. This master's thesis applies operations strategy to structuring global business services. Understanding of the issue is increased with the aim of improving decision-making in companies. |
Abstract (fin): | Palvelutuotanto on aiemmin ollut paikallista toimintaa. Tekniikan, erityisesti tietoliikennetekniikan, kehityksen myötä, joidenkin palveluiden etätuotannosta on tullut mahdollista. Palveluliiketoiminnan kilpailukykyä voidaan parantaa muuttamalla rakennetta, eli uudelleenstrukturoinnilla. Muutosten tulisi pohjautua perusteelliseen analyysiin. |
