Abstract (eng): Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) converts chemical energy of fuel directly into electricity and heat.
Due to its good efficiency and low operating temperature, it is a potential power source for automotive and portable applications.
One important component inside a PEMFC is a porous transport layer (PTL) that e.g. provides an even distribution of reactant gases to the active area of the cell, and connects the fuel cell electrically and thermally.
When a fuel cell is assembled, it has to be pressed to ensure e.g. good gas tightness and electrical conductivity.
This compresses the PTL, which changes its physical properties.

In this mater's thesis the properties of PTL under various compression pressures were studied.
The measurement methods included mechanical, electrical and thermal measurements.
The thesis is done for the Tekes-funded MARAPOKE project, and the measurements in this work provide a baseline data for the PTL material candidates that will come as a result of the project.
Abstract (fin): Polymeeripolttokenno on sähkökemiallinen laite, joka muuttaa polttoaineen kemiallisen energian hyvällä hyötysuhteella sähköksi ja lämmöksi.
Matalan toimintalämpötilansa takia polymeeripolttokennoja on suunniteltu käytettäväksi esim. kannettavissa sovelluksissa ja autoissa.
Yksi tärkeä polymeeripolttokennon komponentti on kaasudiffuusiokerros (KDK), joka mahdollistaa reaktanttien tasaisen jakautumisen kennon aktiiviselle alalle sekä toimii sähkön- ja lämmönjohtimena kennon sisällä.
Kennoa kasattaessa tarvittava puristuspaine painaa KDK:n kasaan, millä on monia vaikutuksia KDK:n fysikaalisiin ominaisuuksiin.
