Abstract (eng): The aim of this thesis was to develop understanding about the quality characteristics of aggregate products so that cost savings can he achieved in the production of normal strength concrete.

The newest knowledge about effects of aggregate quality characteristics to the properties of concrete was explored in the literature study, focusing to particle packing, effects on fresh concrete water demand and concrete compressive strength development.

At the research part of the study, the mix proportioning of six ready-mix plants were explored. 35 concrete castings and several aggregate quality examinations were made.
A new mix proportioning method was developed for non-admixture concrete in strength class C25/30.
It is based on examination results, literature study and former knowledge about mix proportioning.
On ground of the research, as only aggregates are concerned the most important quality characteristics for fresh concrete water demand are the amount of particles in paste, specific surface of paste and packing of the aggregate mixture.
The most important aggregate characteristics for concrete strength are surface texture and in some cases organic matter content.
Coarse aggregate surface should also he free of dust and clays.

With the new mix proportioning method the water demand decreased on average 8 litres per cubic metre.
The Amount of cement per compressive strength was calculated.
The parameter decreased on average 0,3 kilogram of cement/MPa.
Abstract (fin): Tutkimuksen tavoite oli kehittää kiviainesten laatuominaisuuksien ymmärtämystä siten, että saavutetaan kustannussäästöjä normaalibetonin valmistuksessa.
Tutkimuksen kirjallisuusosassa pyrittiin kokoamaan uusin olemassa oleva tieto kiviaineksen laatuominaisuuksien vaikutuksista betoniin, keskittyen partikkelien pakkautumiseen, kiviainesominaisuuksien vaikutuksiin tuoreen betonimassan vedentarpeeseen sekä betonin lujuudenkehitykseen.

Kokeellisessa osassa tutkittiin kuuden olemassa olevan tehtaan kiviainessuhteitusta.
Tutkimuksessa suoritettiin 35 betonivalua ja lukuisa määrä kiviaineskokeita.
Koetulosten ja olemassa olevan, kirjallisuustutkimuksessa jäsennellyn tiedon perusteella laadittiin uusi kiviainessuhteitusmenetelmä notkistamattomalle normaalibetonille lujuusluokassa K30.
Kiviaineksen kannalta tärkeimmiksi asioiksi betonimassan vedentarpeen kannalta havaittiin pastassa olevan rakeisen aineksen määrä, ominaispinta-ala sekä seoksen pakkautuvuus.
Lujuudenkehityksen kannalta tärkeimpiä asioita olivat karkean kiviaineksen pinnanmuoto ja puhtaus, sekä joissain tapauksissa humuspitoisuus.

Uuden suhteitusmenetelmän avulla vedentarve pieneni keskimäärin 8 litralla per kuutio.
Käyttämällä tunnuslukuna sementin määrää per saavutettu lujuus saatiin betonimassoja parannettua keskimäärin 0,3 kg sementtiä/Mpa.
