Abstract (eng): | In ship design various finite element analyses with models at different scale levels are performed during the design project. Creating these models is very laborious and a way to increase design performance is to create finite element models based on a 3D product model of a ship. When the finite element model is created automatically the challenge is to ensure that quality of the mesh is adequate for the analysis and that it possesses at least the minimum quality to perform the analysis. The objective of this thesis was to find a suitable method to measure initial quality of the finite element mesh. By initial mesh quality it is meant that no analysis solution is available at the time of the quality evaluation. Another objective was to evaluate if there is a correlation between the analysis results and the mesh quality measures. In the finite element method the accuracy of the analysis is strongly related to discretization error. Two main approaches to estimate error are a priori and a posteriori error estimates. Utilization of these two approaches to measure initial quality of the mesh is difficult, because both require information from either the exact solution or approximate solution. This information is not available at the time when the mesh is created. For measuring the initial quality of the mesh a lot of different quality measures are available. Measures are purely based on geometrical properties of the elements and all of them measure more or less the same thing i.e. how much the shape of the element deviates from the optimal element. These measures do not have a clear connection to analysis results, but this study shows that mesh quality measures and analysis results do have a correlation. With better mesh quality the results were more accurate; however discretization error was the dominating error component. For ship design these measures are suitable because discretization error is taken into account in the classification societies rules. These rules define in detail how the model must be created and distorted elements are not allowed in areas of interest. During this study a tool to evaluate mesh quality was created into NAPA Steel program. Tool gives qualitative and quantitative information from the model and guides user to locations where there are need for corrections. |
Abstract (fin): | Yhden laivansuunnitteluprojektin aikana tehdään useita lujuusanalyysejä elementtimenetelmällä. Analyysien työläin ja aikaavievin vaihe on analyysimallien tekeminen. Suunnitteluprosessia voidaan nopeuttaa luomalla analyysimallit automaattisesti laivan 3D-tuotemallin pohjalta. Elementtiverkon tulee vastata analyysien tarpeita, ja haasteena on varmistaa automaattisesti luodun elementtiverkon riittävä laatu. Tämän diplomityön tavoite oli löytää menetelmä, jolla laivan tuotemallin pohjalta automaattisesti luodun elementtiverkon laatua voitaisiin mitata verkon luontivaiheessa, jolloin analyysin tulokset eivät vielä ole käytettävissä. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli tutkia elementtiverkon laadun vaikutusta analyysien tuloksiin. Elementtimenetelmässä analyysin tulosten tarkkuus on yhteydessä mallin diskretoinnin aiheuttamaan virheeseen. Kaksi yleisintä tapaa arvioida tätä virhettä ovat a priori ja a posteriori virheindikaattorit. Näiden virheindikaattoreiden käyttäminen verkon laadun mittaamiseen verkon luontivaiheessa on kuitenkin hankalaa, koska indikaattorit tarvitsevat tietoa analyysin tuloksista. Verkon laadun mittaamiseen verkon luontivaiheessa on tarjolla useita erilaisia verkon laatumittareita. |
