Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng):This study focuses on essential strategic issues relevant to contemporary information technology functions.
As its main finding, the study presents a framework for an information technology strategy, which is complemented by a case study and applied to a university context.

The research problem of this study can be expressed as the question: What should be the strategy of the information technology function of the case university?
By answering this question the study synthesizes different aspects of information technology strategy into a customer-centric approach for the use of the case university.
This study has four objectives:.

1. To review existing literature on information technology strategy, governance and information systems management to identify the most important strategic decisions to be made by internal information technology functions.

2. To investigate how these decisions are made in some successful information technology functions in Finnish companies.

3. To find correlations between organizational context and the strategic decisions by information technology functions.

4. To formulate a strategy for the information technology function at the case the university on the basis of the special characteristics of the university and an optimal set of strategic decisions synthesized from the literature and case studies.

The literature study examines previous research on information technology strategy, information technology governance and information systems management.
As a synthesis of the literature study, a framework is introduced for an information technology strategy that emphasizes the importance of organizational context.
The case study describes the information technology functions of seven large Finnish companies and applies the introduced framework to these companies. finding consistencies between the strategic choices made within the information technology functions and the organizational context.
In addition, the case study identifies examples of contemporary best practice for managing these functions.
Finally, the framework and the results of the case study are applied to the case university.

The results suggest that instead of focusing solely on technology, the information technology function at the case university should be organized to serve its main stakeholder groups.
In addition, it should introduce transparent internal processes to justify its costs as well as take more responsibility managing the enterprise architecture and administrative processes of the university.
Abstract (fin):Tämä diplomityö keskittyy modernien informaatioteknologiafunktioiden strategiaan.
Työn keskeisin tulos on tapaustutkimuksella täydennetty informaatioteknologiastrategian viitekehysmalli, jota sovelletaan yliopistomaailmaan.

Työn päätutkimusongelma voidaan esittää kysymyksenä: Mikä tulisi olla kohdeyliopiston informaatioteknologiafunktion strategia?
Tähän kysymykseen vastaamalla tutkimus kokoaa yhteen informaatioteknologiastrategian eri osa-alueita ja parhaita käytäntöjä kohdeyliopiston käyttöön.
Tutkimuksen tärkeimmät tavoitteet ovat:.

1. Tunnistaa teoriakirjallisuuden pohjalta sisäisen informaatioteknologiafunktion ohjaamiseen liittyvät olennaisimmat strategiset päätökset.

2. Tarkastella, kuinka kyseiset päätökset on tehty suomalaisten yritysten tunnustusta saaneissa informaatioteknologiafunktioissa.

3. Löytää yhteyksiä organisaatioviitekehyksen ja informaatioteknologiafunktion strategisten päätösten välillä.

4. Muodostaa strategia kohdeyliopiston informaatioteknologiafunktion strategia, joka perustuu kohdeyliopiston ominaisuuksiin, informaatioteknologiastrategian viitekehysmalliin ja tapaustutkimuksen tuloksiin.

Kirjallisuuskatsaus tarkastelee olemassa olevaa kirjallisuutta informaatioteknologiastrategiasta. hyvästä tietohallintotavasta ja informaatiojärjestelmien hallinnasta.
Kirjallisuuskatsauksen yhteenvetona esitetään ympäröivän organisaation huomioon ottava informaatioteknologiastrategian viitekehysmalli.
Tapaustutkimuksessa esitellään seitsemän suuren suomalaisen yrityksen informaatioteknologiafunktiot.
Soveltamalla kohdeyrityksiin teorian pohjalta luotua viitekehysmallia siinä löydetään yhteneväisyyksiä informaatioteknologiafunktioiden strategisten valintojen ja funktioita ympäröivän organisaatioympäristön välillä.
Tapaustutkimuksessa löydetään myös nykyaikaisia parhaita toimintatapoja informaatioteknologiafunktioiden johtamiseen.
Lopuksi kohdeyliopiston informaatioteknologiafunktiolle muodostetaan strategia luodun viitekehysmallin, tapaustutkimuksen esimerkkien ja kohdeyliopiston organisaationympäristön pohjalta.

Tutkimustulosten mukaan kohdeyliopiston informaatioteknologiafunktion tulisi pelkkään teknologiaan keskittymisen sijasta organisoitua palvelemaan pääsidosryhmiään.
Sen pitäisi lisäksi tuoda läpinäkyvyyttä sisäisiin prosesseihinsa kustannusten perustelemiseksi ja ottaa enemmän vastuuta yliopiston kokonaisarkkitehtuurin ja hallinnon prosessien hallinnassa.
