Abstract (eng): | Within the last decade the software industry has undergone major changes. In the past, companies were forced to develop, market, and distribute software products and services by relying primarily on internal resources. Nowadays, after the birth of online ecosystems, they can utilize existing software frameworks, development tools, distribution channels, and markets in their business. In this study the online ecosystem is defined as a combination of business ecosystem and software ecosystem consisting of loosely connected entities, such as producers, customers, marketers, and financiers that interact with each other in complex ways. The environment in which these entities operate is built around the unified web-based platform or market created by the ecosystem hub. This environment provides entities with the means to create, distribute, and consume software products and services. This study focuses on competitive advantage in online ecosystems. The literature study examines existing academic knowledge related to the concept of online ecosystem and competitive advantage. The empirical part, based on multiple case studies, identifies the sources of competitive advantage that firms can build iii these ecosystems. The results of the study indicate that companies can build competitive advantage in online ecosystems. This competitive advantage can he achieved through marketing activities, such as visibility, social networking, brand, and timing. It can also be based on operational issues, such as cooperation, economies of scale, and innovations. These sources of competitive advantage are also highly interconnected with visibility being the most essential element. The amount of existing literature dealing with competitive advantage in online ecosystems is limited. This study provides understanding of online ecosystems in general, identifies sources of competitive advantage that firms may build in these ecosystems and suggests topics for further research. |
Abstract (fin): | Ohjelmistoala on kokenut suuria muutoksia viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana. Kilpailuetua online-ekosysteemeissä käsittelevää akateemista kirjallisuutta on vähän. |
