Abstract (eng): The object of this master's thesis was to simulate the casting process of a squirrel cage rotor manufactured by using a cold chamber high pressure die casting (HPDC) system.
The focus was set to study the melt behaviour during mold filling and solidification to solve the origins of porosity defect present in the final product and to better understand the casting process.

Simulations were carried out by commercially available casting simulation software package MAGMASOFT and its MAGMAhpdc module for high pressure die castings.
MAGMASOFT is modern simulation software based on numerical solver that is tool for process evaluation, die design and analysis.
One simulation was performed to recreate the exact casting process of the foundry.
Additional simulations with modified process parameters were performed in hopes of finding ways to better the casting process.

The outcome of this master's thesis was series of images that help the foundry to visualize events inside the mold during casting process.
Porosity defect was successfully reproduced by the predictions from the software.
Additional simulations provided useful information for the future improvements of the casting process.
Abstract (fin): Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli simuloida kylmäkammioisella korkeapainevalumenetelmällä valmistetun oikosulkuroottorin valutapahtuman kulku.
Tavoitteena oli muottionkalossa esiintyvien ilmiöiden, kuten sulan metallin liikemekanismien, selvittäminen ja valmiissa tuotteessa havaitun huokoisuusongelman syntyperän ratkaiseminen.

Työn aikana suoritetut simulaatiot tehtiin erityisesti valimoiden tarpeisiin kehitettyä MAGMASOFT -ohjelmistoa ja sen korkeapainevaluille suunniteltua MAGMAhpdc -moduulia käyttäen.
MAGMASOFT edustaa nykyaikaista, numeeriseen ratkaisuun perustuvaa simulaatio-ohjelmistoa, jonka käyttö on lisääntynyt tasaisesti ohjelman julkaisusta lähtien.
Työssä suoritetaan yksi simulaatio todellisen kappaleen valmistusprosessin kuvaamiseksi.
Lisäksi suoritettiin simulaatioita, joissa prosessiparametreja on muutettu tuotteen valuprosessin parantamisen mahdollisuuksien selvittämiseksi.

Diplomityön tuloksena muotin sisäiset tapahtumat saatiin esitettyä kuvina, joiden avulla valimo kykenee paremmin ymmärtämään valutapahtuman kulkua.
Todellisen kappaleen valmistuksen kattava simulaatio kykeni toistamaan huokoisuusongelman syntymisen.
Muiden simulaatioiden avulla saatiin arvokasta tietoa prosessin jatkokehittämiseksi.
