Reading digital theses in the closed network of the Aalto University Harald Herlin Learning Centre

You can read theses on the Learning Centre customer computers, which are available on all floors.

Logging on to the customer computers

  • Aalto University staff members log on to the customer computer using the Aalto username and password.
  • Other customers log on using a shared username and password.

Opening a thesis

  • On the desktop of the customer computers, you will find an icon titled:

    Aalto Thesis Database

  • Click on the icon to search for and open the thesis you are looking for from Aaltodoc database. You can find the thesis file by clicking the link on the OEV or OEVS field.

Reading the thesis

  • You can either print the thesis or read it on the customer computer screen.
  • You cannot save the thesis file on a flash drive or email it.
  • You cannot copy text or images from the file.
  • You cannot edit the file.

Printing the thesis

  • You can print the thesis for your personal study or research use.
  • Aalto University students and staff members may print black-and-white prints on the PrintingPoint devices when using the computer with personal Aalto username and password. Color printing is possible using the printer u90203-psc3, which is located near the customer service. Color printing is subject to a charge to Aalto University students and staff members.
  • Other customers can use the printer u90203-psc3. All printing is subject to a charge to non-University members.

Abstract (eng): Vehicle lighting technology is undergoing a transitional period: xenon lights are growing in popularity side by side with halogen gas lights.
Gas-discharge light sources have been making their brake through for some 20 years, but only the next decade will illuminate our highways with the colour of xenon.

The yellow toned halogen gas lights will develop and hold their own against competing technologies for a long time.
Their development will even change their tone to match that of the xenon lights.
The traditional H4 halogen lamp will keep its position within the automotive industry, despite the rapidly growing range of different halogen lamps.

It is regrettable that often car manufacturers are looking to cut their costs on the expense of light fittings.
In the modern car, inferior light fittings and lighting systems are an altogether too common a phenomena, despite the fact that lights are a safety equipment equivalent to electronic stability control, anti-lock brake system and airbags, especially in a country like Finland.

The use of xenon lights improves especially the short range lighting.
New technologies are already available even for the less expensive vehicles.
Let's hope that the manufacturers will not economise on the quality of xenon lights, as the daylight white gas discharge light source has a much stronger glare effect than a poor quality halogen light.
There will be enough of these inferior xenon lights on our roads without the input of car manufacturers, as the illegal practise of modifying halogen light fittings into xenon lights is very common.

Xenon lights should always be fitted together with daytime running lamps.
The new dawn of the daytime running lamps is just about to begin.
In the future, the extremely energy efficient LEDs will gain priority, as they offer the designers a chance to create individual lighting solutions.
A similar freedom of design can be seen in the custom installations, which have an important role in Finland.

Headlights using LED technology are only at the very beginning of their development.
The xenon has been coming for 20 years now, so we shall have to wait for some time to see a more widespread use of LEDs in other than daytime running lamps and rear lights.

On the other hand, AFS systems, i.e. adaptive front lighting systems, will soon be a standard fixture even in cars of the lower price range.
The development of night view assist is also in a good stage.
Abstract (fin): Ajoneuvojen valotekniikka on murrosvaiheessa: ksenonvalot yleistyvät kovaa vauhtia halogeenivalojen rinnalla.
Kaasunpurkausvalot ovat tehneet tuloaan noin 20 vuotta, mutta vasta 2010-luku tulee muuttamaan maantiet vaalean ksenonvalon väriseksi.

Keltasävyiset halogeenivalot pitävät vielä pitkään pintansa ja kehittyvät kilpailevan tekniikan rinnalla - ja värisävyltään jopa ksenonien suuntaan.
Perinteinen H4-halogeenipolttimo säilyttää paikkansa autoteollisuudessa, vaikka erilaisten halogeenipolttimoiden kirjo kasvaa kovaa vauhtia.

Autotehtaat hakevat valitettavan usein kustannussäästöjä valaisimista.
Moderneissa nykyautoissa käytetään luvattoman paljon huonoja valaisimia ja valoratkaisuja, vaikka valot ovat ajonvakautukseen, ABS-jarruihin ja turvatyynyihin verrattava turvavaruste ainakin Suomen tapaisessa maassa.

Ksenonvalon avulla parannetaan erityisesti lähialueen valaisua.
Uutta tekniikkaa on jo tarjolla myös edullisemman pään autoihin.
Toivottavasti ksenonvalaisimien laadussa ei säästetä, sillä päivänvalonvalkoista hajavaloa tuottava kaasunpurkausvalaisin häikäisee paljon enemmän kuin huono halogeenivalaisin.
Tätä huonoa ksenonvaloa saadaan teille riittävästi ilman autotehtaiden panostakin, sillä halogeenivalojen laiton muuntaminen ksenonvalaisimiksi on erittäin yleistä.

Ksenonvalojen yhteydessä pitäisi aina olla huomiovalot, ja huomiovalojen uusi tuleminen onkin juuri alkamassa.
Erittäin energiatehokas ledi on huomiovaloissa tulevaisuuden ykkösvaihtoehto, sillä valkoiset ledit tarjoavat muotoilijoille keinon loihtia yksilöllisiä valaisimia.
Samanlainen muotoilun vapaus on myös jälkiasennuksessa, joka nousee Suomessa merkittävään rooliin.

Led-tekniikalla toteutetut ajovalot elävät vasta kehityksensä alkuhetkiä.
Ksenonvalot ovat tehneet tuloaan yli 20 vuotta, joten ledien yleistymistä saadaan odottaa vielä pitkään muissa kuin huomio- ja takavalaisimissa.

AFS-järjestelmät eli mukautuvat ajovalot ovat sen sijaan kohta arkipäivää jopa edullisemman hintaluokan autoissa.
Myös pimeänäköavustimien kehitys on hyvässä vaiheessa.
