Abstract (eng): | The simplicity of Ethernet technologies makes it popular as layer-2 technology. However, Ethernet being based on old technology using the Spanning Tree Protocol developed in 1985, its use in current environments does not satisfy the present requirements. Broadcasting and resiliency of the links in the network are major areas of interest in understanding the impact of the protocols used in Ethernet. The thesis makes the study of different variants of Spanning Tree Protocol and their operation. Different approaches made in the industry to address the challenges pertaining to the use of Ethernet in mobile environment have been discussed. Real world packet data have been used to study the nature of broadcasting in the network both in fixed and wireless environment. Also, simulation has been carried out to study the resiliency of the legacy Spanning Tree Protocols (STP, RSTP) in different configurations. |
