Abstract (eng): | The demand to maximize the number of balcony cabins has increased the height of new cruise ships. This causes problems for the stability of the ships due to the increased position of the center of gravity. Therefore, there is a demand to use thinner steel plates to reduce the weight of the superstructure. At the moment, the smallest allowed plate thickness in the ship structures is 5 mm, which is wanted to be replaced by 3 mm thick plates. However, compared to thicker plates, thin plates are more sensitive to welding defects such as axial misalignment, angular misalignment and curvature. The purpose of the research was to investigate how the shape of the joint affects the fatigue strength of 3 to 5 mm thick butt joints. Especially, the effect of the curvature and straightening of the joints were studied experimentally and numerically. For the experiments, three test series were fabricated. Test specimens were measured by an optical measuring device to determine the amount of the welding deformations. In addition, fatigue tests were carried out, and finite element method was used to study the influence of slenderness and curvature of the joint to the structural stress. According to geometrical measurements, all test series contained welding deformations and axial misalignments. In general, on nominal stress range, fatigue strengths were low, and the scatter band of the results was large. Numerical analyses indicated that deformations have a large influence on the stress distribution of the joint. In some cases, structural stress was three times higher in joints with curved plates in comparison to joints with straight plates. In addition, the most critical location for fatigue crack initiation, changed from the toe side to the root side of the joint due to the curved shape. The behaviour of thin butt joints under axial loading was highly non-linear due to the significant straightening effect. In the study, curved shape of the butt joint was modelled according to the local angle and the radius of curvature. In addition, a new method was developed to extrapolate structural stresses to the weld toes. The modelling technique and extrapolation method was used to determine structural stress ranges of the fatigue tested specimens. When the fatigue test results were plotted on the structural stress range, the scatter band of results reduced significantly. Also, the fatigue strengths of thin plate joints corresponded to IIW design S-N curves for thick plates. Present analytical models used in fatigue design of the ship structures are based on the classical beam theory, where neither straightening nor local deformation of the joint is taken into account. These methods are inadequate to analyse thin plate joints. If the straightening effect and curvature of the joint are ignored, there is a possibility to over dimension the structure. Also, the fatigue life of the joint is too optimistic when curvature of joint is not taken into account. According to the results of the study, local deformations and non-linear behaviour of the joints should be taken into consideration in fatigue design of thin plate structures. As a further study, full-scale tests should be carried out for the behaviour of thin plate joints in real ship structures. |
Abstract (fin): | Uusien risteilyalusten korkeus kasvaa, koska parvekehyttien lukumäärä halutaan mahdollisimman suureksi. Korkeuden kasvun myötä painopisteen sijainti pyrkii nousemaan. Liian korkea painopiste aiheuttaa ongelmia aluksen vakavuudelle, joten kansirakenteen painoa halutaan pienentää käyttämällä rakenteissa ohuempia teräslevyjä. Tällä hetkellä pienin sallittu levynpaksuus laivan rakenteissa on viisi millimetriä, jota halutaan pienentää kolmeen millimetriin. |
