Abstract (eng): | In this Master's thesis, a novel fungal bioremediation method was compared to more conventional soil clean-up technologies to treat a certain kind of contaminated soil using eco-efficiency analysis. In the literature part different kinds of soil contaminants and contaminated soils are introduced, as well as different kinds of technologies for cleaning up contaminated soils and areas. The principles of the novel fungal bioremediation method and term "eco-efficiency" are also summarized. The experimental part focuses on a treatment of PAH-contaminated soil using six alternative soil remediation methods: hazardous waste landfilling (VE-O), thermal treatment (VE-l), bitumen stabilization (VE-2), aerated fungal treatment (VE-3), and fungal treatment without aeration (VE-4) and aerated garden waste compost treatment (VE-5). For the eco-efficiency analysis, data were compiled on the costs, environmental effects and achievable risk reductions of these alternative remediation techniques. Actual experiments were realized only for alternatives VE-3 and VE-5. The other alternatives were purely hypothetical. The main objective of the work was to compare the fungal treatment method against the alternative methods, and data for its eco-efficiency appraisal was generated in a separate field study using two tons of P AH-contaminated soil. As a pretreatment, the soil was first mixed with garden waste compost, which resulted in the PAH-concentration of approximately 1400 mg / kg (sum of 16 PAHs). During a five-month-treatment the PAHs degraded similarly in both the fungal treatment pile (inoculated with white-rot fungus Phanerochaete velutina) and the control pile (without fungal inoculum). After five months, the concentrations of the PAHs were approximately 100 mg / kg (fungal treatment) and 80 mg / kg (control). The degradation of the PAHs took virtually place in both soil piles during the first three months of the experiment. In the eco-efficiency analysis, thermal treatment turned out as the most eco-efficient method, which lowered the risks arising from PAHs effectively and economically, without significant environmental effects. The second most eco-efficient method was bitumen stabilization. Aerated garden waste compost treatment and fungal treatment without aeration with low inoculation ratio did also well in the eco-efficiency comparison. It can be concluded that fungal treatment could have potential in remediation of PAH-contaminated soils, as well as other contaminated soils. Treatment with garden waste compost could be very eco-efficient remediation method for PAH-contaminated soil when implemented without aeration and with optimized compost to soil ratio. |
Abstract (fin): | Tässä diplomityössä uutta kehitettyä pilaantuneen maaperän puhdistukseen käytettävää sienikäsittelymenetelmää vertailtiin perinteisiin käsittelytekniikoihin ekotehokkuustarkastelun avulla. |
