Abstract (eng): | Tightening environmental regulations and the increasing price of fuel oil, focus increasing attention on the energy efficiency of a ship in seafaring. Various advisory systems are becoming more common in ships and shipping companies. Such applications collect data from the various systems of the vessel and assist the crew in using the ship more efficiently; thus the shipping company is also able to use the fleet more efficiently. These applications use real-time data from the various sensors of the ship. Therefore, the data from the sensors has to be reliable. Exact, real-time draft measurement is extremely important for a number of applications. Nowadays, the draft is measured either by using pressure-based systems under the ship's bottom or by visual reading from the draft marks the side of the ship. Experiments have shown that pressure-based systems are reliable only in the harbour on static conditions, but when the ship is in speed, the measurement method is unreliable. For this reason, new measurement technology has recently been adopted from the processing industry. The feasibility of a new measurement technology from the marine environment is complicated. A number of factors disturbed the measurement, such as, the waves, the motions of the ship, the changing pressure field around wetted area of the hull, as well as external factors such as fog, rain, spraying water, and ice. In this thesis, we will seek a new measurement technology to recognize the most suitable technology for marine use. Also, we will compare pulse radar and pressure-based draft measurement, fitted in a large container vessel. In addition, we will study various advisory software applications that use real-time draft measurement data, to help the crew decide on how to use the ship more efficiently. For the purposes of this thesis, we have excluded any technologies that are unsuitable for measuring a ship's draft. As to usable measurement technologies, we will show that draft measurement is challenging and a large array of possible appliances can be used to obtain a reliable measurement. Also, it is possible to measure the ship's draft when the ship has quite a reliable velocity. By using different applications, it is possible to operate the ship more efficiently. However, by using a comprehensive system where all applications work seamlessly together, it is possible to operate the ship even more efficiently. |
Abstract (fin): | Merenkulussa ympäristöasioiden tiukentumisen ja polttoaineen kallistumisen myötä laivojen energiatehokkuuteen kiinnitetään entistä enemmän huomiota. Erilaiset päätöksentekoa tukevat sovellukset lisääntyvät laivoissa ja varustamoissa. Nämä sovellukset keräävät tietoa aluksen eri järjestelmistä ja auttavat miehistöä aluksen tehokkaampaan käyttöön ja varustamoa tehostamaan koko laivaston käyttöä. Nämä sovellukset käyttävät eri laitteista saatavaa mittaustietoa ja niistä saadun tiedon pitää olla luotettavaa. Syväyden tarkka reaaliaikainen tietäminen on monelle sovellukselle äärimmäisen tärkeää. Tämän vuoksi viime vuosina on tuotu eri teknologioita syväyden mittaamiseen prosessiteollisuudesta. Niiden soveltuvuus vaihtelevaan meriympäristöön on kuitenkin haastavaa. |
