Abstract (eng): | Universities have in the last decade shown increasing interest in using virtual worlds such as Second Life in teaching. Virtual worlds not only give new meaning to distance education, but can also be of great use in teaching science where practical skills are required of the students but time and budgets set restrictions on laboratory classes. Second Life offers a platform for virtual laboratories. In this thesis a virtual molecular biology laboratory was designed in Second Life. In the laboratory students genetically identify an enterovirus from a sample by extracting the genetic material and sequencing it. The purpose is for students to learn how to use basic molecular biology techniques, such as purification of RNA and amplification of a gene by PCR. Another objective of this thesis was to review existing literature on the effectiveness of teaching in Second Life and other virtual environments and the transfer of learning from a virtual context to a real-world context. The design of the laboratory was done by familiarizing with the real-world laboratory techniques and the theory behind them, and then converting them into a simplified, pedagogical virtual form in accordance with theories on learning found in the literature review. Instead of mimicking real-life student laboratories, the virtual laboratory was designed to mimic the work of a real-life scientist, e.g. by avoiding step-by-step guides. Instead of paying too much attention to detail, the order of steps and the big picture of the experiment played a bigger role. The contribution of the present work has been, for the first time, to describe the design of a molecular biology experiment ingrained with the programming of the objects and the step-by-step guide for use by the student and the teacher. This molecular laboratory adds a new facility to the Aalto Second Life Archipelago. |
Abstract (fin): | Yliopistot ovat viime vuosikymmenen aikana huomattavasti kasvattaneet mielenkiintoaan Second Lifen kaltaisten virtuaalimaailmojen opetuskäyttöä kohtaan. Virtuaalimaailmojen etäopetukseen tarjoamien hyötyjen lisäksi ne tarjoavat erinomaiset edellytykset opettaa käytännön taitoja luonnontieteissä, joissa laboratorio-opetusta hankaloittavat usein aika- ja budjettirajoitteet. Second Life tarjoaa alustan virtuaalilaboratorioille. Tässä työssä on ensimmäisen kerran suunniteltu molekyylibiologian oppilaslaboratorio Aalto yliopiston Second Life saaristoon. |
