Abstract (eng): | The objective of this study was to research the activities of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES), and to investigate the benefits and challenges of a MES. Technical aspects related to the MES are also described. Finally, considerations of a MES implementation process are presented. In this thesis contents of the standard ISA-95 is examined and compared with the standard ISA-88. The ISA-95 standard defines MES activities and can be used as the basis for designing the data exchange with other systems. Also opportunities for applying the standard ISA-95 are discussed. This study defines MES as a system between an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and a shop floor control system. Even though ERP systems and control systems can communicate directly, a MES can fill needs for production control, which are usually detailed scheduling processes or shop floor documentation activities. A factory with production of variety of products with large volumes needs a MES to intensify its capacity usage and to improve management of the entire manufacturing processes. Implementing a MES instead of updating an entire ERP or control system is typically only a fraction of the cost. MESs are nowadays more common in process industries, where the production is usually fully automated. |
